During Spring Break 2026, Pequannock Township High School language students in grades 11-12 will visit Costa Rica. Spanish teacher Señora King was interviewed for an inside look.
Señora King reported that this trip is for educational purposes, “to give students the opportunity to travel to a Spanish-speaking country they learned about and to learn about the culture and language outside the classroom.” Experiencing real Spanish culture and language for eight days straight should increase the students' ability to understand Spanish while having fun doing so. The trip is set to last eight days, and in those eight days, the students and teachers will travel to the capital San Jose, the western parts, and the northwestern parts of Costa Rica.
The accommodations in Costa Rica are not well-known five-star hotels. Instead, to keep within a smaller budget, the students will stay in traditional lodgings that can fit the thirty-two students attending the trip. One hotel is more remote because it's near a volcanic area in the middle of the mountains.
To help the students' families pay for their trip, the teachers are thinking of fundraisers. “Fundraisers are still up for discussion but possibly doing a community movie night during Dia De Los Muertos, Day of the Dead, celebration is a possibility,” Señora King reported. Señora King also plans to organize local donations and fundraisers that are mostly community-based, like raffles.
Costa Rica is a well-known vacation spot for families who love outdoor activities. To make this trip fun and educational, the students will participate in outdoor activities and sports. The main activities include ziplining, hiking, sightseeing, cooking, and white water rafting, all of which were discussed in Spanish class throughout the year. “I am most excited for the students to experience the culture in person and, of course, the ziplining,” Señora King stated.
This is the first time Pequannock Township High School will travel to Costa Rica. “I would also like to maybe try other opportunities and locations in the future as well,” Señora King reported.
