Evan’s stargazing telescope. He hopes
that through the club the school will be
able to obtain more.

PTHS’s newest extracurricular, Astronomy Club, held its first ever meeting on Friday, October 25. To start though, it practically grew out of the vacuum of space to become what it is today. Originating with a science fair project on the expansion of the universe he created in elementary school, founding member Evan Pera’s passion in observing and studying the known universe has only, evidently grown. He explains just how important astronomy is for everyone to consider and understand based on his own personal experience with it. In his own words, “...it’s a form of art and a means of progression.” He thoroughly discussed with other fellow members at the meeting on Friday how compelling it is to be a part of everything around
you, both figuratively and literally. To comprehend that everything we know and are familiar with is just a small part of the larger picture can deepen our thinking and appreciation for everyday life.
The club’s gradual beginning had no effect on its efficiency and organization, however. Club activities, leadership positions, and plans for the future are already mapped out to a certain degree. New and more experienced astronomers are especially looking forward to stargazing nights, planetarium visits, telescope building, and taking detailed photographs of the night sky, all fun events promised to take place throughout the duration of the club. The club’s founder expressed his thoughts: “If you’re thinking about joining this club, you do not need any experience whatsoever. As long as you display interest, come to meetings, and show constant attendance, I hope you learn something this year.” And who knows? Maybe you’ll find a new passion you never knew you had in you through joining Astronomy Club. The club’s sponsoring adult and chemistry teacher at PTHS, Mr. Sutherland, professed a similar enthusiasm for the club’s launch: “I’m looking forward to working with Evan in establishing Astronomy Club, and I hope we can investigate some of the incredible events that happen around us.” He couldn’t have said it better.
With that, I would like to leave you with a quote: “I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth.” Renowned astronaut Neil Armstrong said this in response to being the first man to step foot on the Moon in July of 1969 with the Apollo 11 mission. Just to put into perspective the insignificance we face in the entire starry expanse we call our home.
