PEQUANNOCK - Coach McBurney and his baseball team, the Pequannock Golden Panthers, prepare for another big season filled with high expectations.
“We know there are high expectations for us every year, and we as a team have them for ourselves. But all we can do right now is take it one game at a time. We have to focus on the next game instead of focusing on the outcome of this season,” head coach Mr. McBurney said about this upcoming season. McBurney is a former student of Pequannock High School and has been their baseball head coach since 2017.
The Pequannock High School baseball team is set to take on its rival, Kinnelon, in the season opener on March 31. This will be the start of what hopes to be a championship season for all of the players, coaches, and the rest of the Pequannock community. In preparation, the Pequannock baseball team has been working hard since early March. They have practiced before and after school and on the weekends in order to play well during the season.
“We’ve been giving it our all every day. We're all working hard, making sure there are no holes, so when it comes time for the regular season, us playing good ball is a habit,” pitcher Nick Werner says. Nick is a senior and getting ready to play his last season at PTHS, but his baseball career isn't over; he’s going to Fairleigh Dickinson University after high school as a baseball commit.
The Pequannock baseball team has been on the winning side recently. They made it to the fourth round of the playoffs last year. In 2023, they won their group title against Buena, solidifying themselves as state champions. The team hopes to have the same, if not more, success this year than their 2023 season.
